ARC CCeMMP Bench to Art Exhibition 2024

The Australian Research Council Centre for Cryo-Electron Microscopy of Membrane Proteins (CCeMMP) is holding their inaugural ‘Bench to Art’ Exhibition to showcase the artistic flair of structural biologists in a virtual exhibition during National Science Week. Our goal is to share stories of exploration and discovery in structural biology with the broader community.

Voting for the People’s Choice Award closed at 5pm AEST on the 27th of August, 2024.

Prizes

Cash prizes will be awarded in the following categories:

First Prize Award – $300 AUD

First Prize will be awarded by a judging panel composed of creatives in the scientific field and artists. Images will be evaluated based on their aesthetic appeal, not on the data they depict.

People’s Choice Award – $100 AUD

People’s Choice will be awarded based on the voters’ choice. The community are encouraged to vote for their favourite artwork during the exhibition. Voting has now commenced, please cast your vote here. Voting closed at 5pm AEST on the 27th of August, 2024.

Who and when?

Who can enter?

This is a free event during National Science Week to promote structural biology research. We welcome submissions from anyone:

  • using the technique cryo-EM in their research, or;
  • working on membrane proteins using other techniques (tomography, crystallography, fluorescence microscopy, biochemistry etc).

Creations will be exhibited from 13th of August, 2024.

Closing date for submissions

Submissions are now closed. Closing date for submissions was 5:00 PM AEST, 8th August, 2024. Please ensure that you read and follow the guidelines below before submitting an entry.

Guidelines

Please follow the guidelines below for submitting your artwork. Only artworks meeting these criteria will be eligible for exhibition.

  • Only one entry is permitted per person. Put your best one forward!
  • Artwork to be presented as a still two-dimensional image.
  • Art should be 1920 x 1080 pixels (16:9 ratio). They should not exceed 10 MB in size.
  • File format should be in common image file formats (.jpeg, .tif or .png).
  • Artwork must be presented in highest possible resolution, no blurry or out of focus entries will be accepted.
  • No artificial intelligence software or tools are allowed to be used in the creation of the artwork.
  • The title of the artwork must not exceed 100 characters (including spaces).
  • Prepare a description of your research/artwork in 100 words or less. If your work is generated from published data, include a reference or citation.
  • Prepare 100 words to describe yourself (biosketch) for the audience to get to know the creator.
  • Include a brief description on how the image was created including any software or add-on programs that were used. This information will not be published, but will be used to assist the committee with ensuring the image meets the guidelines.

Permissions and Ownership

Please ensure that you have read and understood the following points before submitting your artwork:

  • By submitting your image, you warrant that you are entitled to do so, and are not aware of any restrictions on the use of the image.
  • If required, ensure that you have secured the necessary permission to submit this image.
  • The image is owned by the nominating entity/individual and, as owner, you must grant CCeMMP an enduring, non-exclusive licence to use the image without charge.

Submissions are now closed. The gallery is now live and can be viewed here.

  • Closing date for submissions was 5:00 PM AEST, 8th August, 2024.
  • The voting for the People’s Choice Award will commenced when the exhibition opened at 9:00 AM AEST on the 13th of August 2024 and closed at 5:00 PM AEST on 27th of August 2024.
  • Prize winners will be announced in September 2024.
