Tips and Tricks for Grants and Fellowships

This workshop aims to give advice and tips/tricks for putting together competitive grant and fellowship proposals. This workshop will focus on the ARC DECRA and DPs, and NHMRC Investigator Grants (EL1 & 2) and Project Grants.

A fundamental and essential skill in Australian research is the ability to attract funding through developing competitive proposals.  The Monash Research Office’s, Research Development Team (RDT) have read, reviewed and analysed hundreds of proposals (competitive and not) with the aim of improving the success of Monash researchers. Key learnings and insights the team have garnered will be presented at this workshop. Targeted to Early Career Researchers, become familiar with the ARC and NHMRC funding schemes and learn the basics of preparing competitive grant proposals. Participants will:

  • Examine different Australian ECR Schemes including:
    1. ARC DECRA
    2. NHMRC Investigators
    3. ARC Discovery Projects
    4. NHMRC Ideas
  • Learn the Monash Research Office’s RDT’s General Tips for Success
  • Dissect the elements of the all important first page
  • Discover and action the secrets to a stronger Research Opportunity and Performance Evidence (ARC) and Relative to Opportunity and Career Context (NHMRC) sections

Lessons learned will be reinforced during breakout sessions in which the RDT will provide examples for you to analyse alongside RDT members and your peers.

Presenters: Dr. Amanda Walmsley (Senior Manager, Major Initiatives, Monash Research Office), Brock Conley and Sharon Morley (Senior Research Development Officers, Monash Research Office).

Essential Elements of a Research Grant Proposal – Hands-on Grant Writing Workshop

There are a bunch of common parts to a research grant proposal, no matter the funder. This session will demystify those parts, enabling researchers to develop a skeleton draft of a research grant proposal, and help them develop an understanding of how to write about:

  • the significant drivers and need for their research;
  • how their research innovatively addresses an important problem in their discipline;
  • how past outcomes of the applicant or applicant team make the new project feasible;
  • the planned significant new knowledge, outcomes, products and/or services their project plans to deliver;
  • engagements required prior to, during and after the project is executed to enable benefit and research impact.

Researchers will bring a project idea they are planning to develop into a grant application to the session.

Presenter: Dr Benedicta Rousseau, The GrantED Group

When: 1:30pm – 4:30pm, Thursday 12th September, 2024

Only participants that have a project idea/grant they can bring to the workshop will be accepted. Participants will need this to work on during the workshop. When registering, you will be asked to send a copy.
